“Lettergate” rumbles on in Crouch End as it’s revealed that Middeys’ new owners initially failed to get the correct planning permissions to remove its Grade II listed features, including a set of art deco letters.
The restaurant was meant to open this Spring. There’s currently no news about when building work will restart.
Middeys lodged the correct documents in February but work has now been halted while a decision is made by Haringey Council and no date has been set.
Many Crouchenders claim that the restaurants owners purposely removed the historic letters from the side of the building.
Crouchender Sue Hessel told Ham & High, “It’s appalling about Middeys – Haringey are their landlords – they should have been on their case from day one.”
The owners of Middeys could not be reached for comment.
